Since the mid-2000s, the City of Vancouver conducts a point-in-time count of its population without permanent shelter. The count is a massive undertaking with hundreds of volunteers who survey people in shelters and on the streets for a whole day. The goal is to understand how many people live without shelter and how this population has changed over time.
My role in the 2015 Homeless Count was to coordinate all volunteers for the Downtown Vancouver area. As part of a contract between the City of Vancouver and MThomson Consulting I liaised with City staff, multiple housing agencies and coordinated more than 90 volunteers in the lead-up to the count. The final report can be found here.
In the 2016 Homeless Count I was responsible for coordinating volunteers in the West Side of Vancouver. Additinally I took on the co-authorship of the final research report and the data analysis.
